Accountant Scott Foster Gets to Play With Chicago Blackhawks
Accountant Scott Foster Gets to Play With Chicago Blackhawks Scott Foster headed to the Chicago Blackhawks game right after work Thursday night. He had no idea heâd be making his National Hockey League debut. The 36-year-old accountant for Golub Capitalâ"and part-time emergency backup goalieâ"got called to the ice when both the Blackhawksâ starting and second-string goalies got injured. Although the head coach, who was seen chuckling behind the bench, may have had low expectations for Fosterâs performance, the accountant ended up stopping all seven shots that came his way in the 14 final minutes of the game. The former Western Michigan University goalie is part of a team of NHL emergency backup goalies, or EBUGs: ordinary people with some playing experience who play only in case of team injuries. But they rarely take the ice; before Foster, the only other EBUG to get NHL ice time played for the Carolina Hurricanes in the final seconds of a game in 2016, according to NHL.com. After Fosterâs standout debut, fans chanted his name at the end of the game, which the Blackhawks won 6-2. He even earned the Blackhawksâ coveted star-player belt. âA few hours ago I was sitting on my computer, typing on a 10-key,â Foster told reporters during a postgame interview. âNow Iâm standing in front of you guys, having just finished 14 and a half minutes of NHL hockey.â Foster told reporters he keeps sharp by playing in two recreational âbeer leaguesâ in his downtime. Despite his fairytale NHL debut, Foster joked heâd take it even further in stories to coworkers and rec league pals: âIâll tell them I made about 30 saves in a 1-0 win.â Foster wonât receive any compensation for the game, according to the Chicago Sun Times, but the father of two said the memories would last him a lifetime. âThis is a dream regardless. Itâs something no one can ever take away from me,â he said. âItâs something I can go home and tell my kids and they can tell their friends and whatnot.â

Personal Branding Advice From Jerry Maguire - Work It Daily
Personal Branding Advice From Jerry Maguire - Work It Daily Whenever Iâm explaining the concept of personal branding, I always end up talking about Jerry Maguire. Yes, before Tom Cruise jumped on Oprahâs couch and became the perpetual butt of Hollywoodâs joke, he starred in one of my all-time-ever favorite movies. He played the title role, Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who has a breakdown breakthrough that leads to him leaving his cushy job and heading out on his own. He takes with him a fish, a humble secretary, and one client. So, where does personal branding come in? Some Great Advice From Jerry Maguire Well, the whole idea of personal branding started with a 1997 article in Fast Company. The author suggests that we (the American workforce) need to stop thinking of ourselves as employees; instead, we should think and act as free agents. And, as free agents, we need to brand ourselves, just like a company brands its products, in order to be competitive in an economy full of free agents, and ultimately, to be in the best bargaining position when weâre drafted. This is essentially the backbone of the Jerry Maguire story. Jerryâs one client, a pro football player named Rod Tidwell (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.), decides to become a free agent but discovers heâs having a really hard time getting the contract he wants. As his agent, Jerry keeps telling him itâs a branding issue: the way Rod perceives himself doesnât align with the way others in the business perceive him. And the value Rod feels he brings to the game doesnât match up with what others see. Jerry fights and fights, telling Rod that his attitude is hurting him and that people think the only thing he cares about is money. To those on the outside, Rodâs heart just isnât in the game. So, essentially, Jerry tells him to fix his brand. He needs to be more authentic and show more of who he really is in order to be competitive. This is a great lesson for everyone, regardless of your profession. Personal branding is all about authenticity and showing who you really are. You canât fake it. When you put up a front, and want people to see things that arenât really there, you come off as a fake and a phony - and no one wants to buy what youâre selling. Rod finally did get the contract he wanted and deserved. But only because he let his true personality come through and people could finally see his love for the game. He stopped pretending. Personal branding isnât an intellectual exercise. You canât pick your brand based on what you think others want and then create a persona to match. Itâs about tapping into all the things that make you special and letting them shine. When youâre able to really do that, others will see your value as clearly as you do. And theyâll pay for YOU because youâre worth it. This post was originally published at an earlier date. Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!
